Much Delayed Post

As many of you would not know, the Oscar Academy Awards committee had expanded the Best Picture category from 5 films to 10 films so as to garner people to watch the awards show as the mainstream films will be nominated. Though 2009 had a bunch of good films, but I thought only some of them deserve the Best Picture spot.

Just take a look at the nominations:

Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

My pick for top 5 films to be nominated for the Oscar would be Avatar, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air.

As much as I find Avatar to be overrated, I can't help but give Avatar a nod for creating such a surreal cinematic experience for the movie-goers. Despite it's groundbreaking effects and breakthrough in technology, the story still sucked.

You guys should know Inglourious Basterds. Hey, this movie came from Quentin Tarantino, one of the greatest directors working in the movie industry, so you should know how amazing this film is. If you haven't check it out, go rent it soon. Though set in Nazi-Occupied France, Quentin still has the knack for writing bad-ass dialogues for his characters.

As for the other 3 movies...

Jason Reitman, director of Up in the Air, proved himself to be a force to be reckon with only 3 amazing films under his belt in only a decade: Thank You For Smoking, Juno and finally this. His father would've been really proud of him. Though I haven't seen An Education, I think it is like a great period drama that Oscar needs for its Best Picture Category. The Hurt Locker is just simply an exceptional film about a bomb defuser in Iraq getting hooked to the tension and it deserves its nomination as well.

See that! You still can have mainstream films in your category with only 5 films! I don't see the point of expanding to 10 films...I'm rooting for either Inglourious Basterds or Up in the Air to win Best Picture...I don't think Avatar deserves it. Awarding The Hurt Locker would be fine as well.
